What Type of Transformer Testing? Part - 2

Testing a Distribution/Power Transformer.

I would like to share some of the tips which can help in ascertaining failure of a distribution/power transformer and also in repair of the same. SPM/TRE Engineers in particular must have these on finger tips.

Single Phase Transformers Test

Single Phase Transformers Test.

PRINCIPLES

The transformer used in this experiment is rated at 115 V/24 V, 100 VA. The voltage rating comes from the ability of the insulation of each winding to safely handle specific voltages, while the VA rating or power (Watt) rating come from current handling capability of these winding, specifically wire thickness. It is important not to mix primary and secondary with high- and low-voltage nomenclature. For this experiment, the primary side is assumed to have the 115 V rating, while the secondary side is rated at 24 V. The 115 V side has two terminals labeled IN1 and IN2, while the secondary side has two terminals labeled OUT1 and OUT2.

How to Troubleshoot Electrical Transformers? Part - 1

How to Troubleshoot Electrical Transformers?

Electrical transformers come in many shapes, sizes, and types. There are potential transformers and current transformers. There are power transformers, audio transformers and signal transformers. There are step-up transformers and step-down transformers. There are auto transformers and isolation transformers and many other types. No matter what their purpose they all suffer from the same basic problems--turn to turn shorts, open winding, winding to ground shorts, for example. All these problems can be detected using a few simple tests and a DMM (Digital Multi meter). For this tutorial we will practice using a 110-volt step-down transformer with a 18-volt, CT (Center Tapped) secondary.

What Type of Transformer Testing? Part - 1

Transformer Testing.

Type Test and Routine Test of Transformer.

For confirming the specifications and performances of an electrical power transformer it has to go through numbers of testing procedures. Some tests are done at manufacturer premises before delivering the transformer. Mainly two types of transformer testing are done at manufacturer premises- type test of transformer and routine test of transformer. In addition to that some transformer tests are also carried out at the consumer site before commissioning and also periodically in regular and emergency basis throughout its service life.
